On the evening of 15 October 2025, the parishioners of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sandakan gathered as a synodal family to celebrate a truly significant occasion: the 18th anniversary of the Diocese of Sandakan, the episcopal ordination of Rt. Rev. Julius Dusin Gitom, and the Bishop’s 68th birthday.

The celebration began with a Thanksgiving Mass at 7:30 pm, which coincided meaningfully with the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Avila — a saint to whom Bishop Julius shares a deep spiritual connection. The celebration was made even more special by the joint participation and true spirit of solidarity from parishioners, BECs and communities of St. Mark’s Church, St. Peter’s Chapel, and St. Mary’s Cathedral.

The 15 of October holds deep significance for the Diocese of Sandakan, marking two pivotal events in its history:  the episcopal ordination of Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom and the official establishment of the diocese in 2007. This date also falls on the Memorial of St. Teresa of Avila, a revered Doctor of the Church known for her profound spirituality and efforts to reform the Carmelite order. Her life of renewal and steadfast faith provided a spiritual meaning for the birth of the new diocese. Thus, 15 October became both a practical and symbolic milestone, connecting the Diocese of Sandakan in the enduring inspiration of a great saint and Doctor of the Church.

St. Teresa’s journey, from spiritual struggle to fervent faith, mirrors the early journey of the Sandakan Diocese, which, since its separation from the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu, has strived to establish its vision and mission. amidst its own trials. In his homily, Bishop Julius reflected his joy and gratitude for the celebration, calling it a gift and blessing from God. Drawing inspiration from St. Teresa of Avila, he encouraged the faithful to always be committed and to never give up, despite their problems and challenges that they are facing. He encourage them to persevere, just like St. Teresa. He reminded the congregation that St. Teresa persevered in prayer and deepened her relationship with Christ, such that she became a powerful reformer and founder of the Discalced Carmelites. Likewise, the Diocese of Sandakan is called to persevere in its spiritual mission, even when faced with lukewarm responses or challenges.

Reflecting on the Gospel, Bishop Julius emphasized, that we are all missionary disciples and that each one of us is called to evangelize, to be non-judgmental, and to be attentive to the calling of the Lord. Our union with Jesus is the source of grace that transforms us. He quoted the timeless words of St. Teresa of Avila, “Let nothing trouble you, let nothing frighten you. Everything passes. God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing. God alone is enough.”

Following the Mass, a joyful fellowship gathering took place at the Parish Hall, where parishioners, as one synodal family, brought food to share in a potbless-style celebration. The atmosphere was filled with unity, warmth, and joy as songs of “Happy Anniversary” and “Happy Birthday” echoed in honour of Bishop Julius, the beloved Shepherd of the Sandakan Diocese.
