Sandakan, 11 November 2025 — The community of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sandakan, together with parishioners from St. Mark’s Church and St. Peter’s Chapel, Sungai Manila, gathered joyfully to celebrate Rev. Fr. Thomas Makajil’s 47th Anniversary of Priesthood. The thanksgiving celebration was filled with gratitude and joy as clergy, religious and parishioners came together to honour Fr. Thomas’ remarkable journey of faith and service to God and His people.

Beyond his priestly duties, Fr. Thomas is well known for his simplicity, humility, and love for nature. A passionate gardener, he finds joy and peace in planting trees and nurturing the earth, a reflection of his deep care for God’s creation. His love for simple rural and less privileged communities, especially those in the Paitan Mission, has made him a beloved deeply respected and cherished by the people he serves, not only as a priest but also as a friend and father figure to many. He currently serves as  Assistant Parish Priest, in the St. Mary’s Parish Cathedral.

In his address, His Lordship, Rt. Rev Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom expressed his joy and gratitude for the blessings poured upon the parish as it celebrated Fr. Thomas’ 47 years of Priestly Ordination. He thanked God for Fr. Thomas’ commitment and dedication as a priest and for the abundant blessings that have flowed from his ministry. Bishop Julius fondly recalled that when Fr. Thomas was already serving as a priest, he himself was still a seminarian, and expressed his deep appreciation for Fr. Thomas’ guidance and example through his own priestly journey. He also thanked the community for their presence and love shown in honouring Fr. Thomas during the celebration.

During the celebration, Rev. Fr. David shared how deeply inspired he was by Fr. Thomas’ 47 years of priestly ministry, a remarkable milestone of faith, service, and dedication to God’s people. He noted with admiration that while he himself is 49 years old, Fr. Thomas has already spent 47 of those years serving as a priest — a true testament to lifelong commitment and love for the Lord. Fr. Thomas’ faithful witness and compassionate service have touched countless lives across the parishes he has served, guiding many closer to God. His ministry continues to inspire his brother priests, reminding them of the true meaning of priesthood — not only in what they do, but in how they serve: with love, humility, and deep trust in God’s providence. As Fr. David expressed, this celebration is not only a thanksgiving for 47 years of priestly life, but also a heartfelt tribute to Fr. Thomas’ hard work, compassion, and friendship that have blessed so many through the years.

In his reflection, Fr. Thomas shared that the day was deeply meaningful day for him, as he gave thanks to God for His blessings and grace throughout his 47 years of priestly life. He continues to draw inspiration in his daily life from his ordination verse, taken from John 6:68: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” He recalled how many had turned away from Jesus because his teachings were difficult, and how the Lord questioned his apostles if they too would leave. Responding to His call, he said, is never easy, but with faith and perseverance, both priests and laity are given the strength to bear witness to Him each day. Looking back on his journey, from the mountains to the sea, from town to remote villages, Fr. Thomas expressed gratitude that God has always provided the strength to overcome each challenge. He urged the community to pray for all priests in the Diocese of Sandakan, especially for Bishop Julius, that they may continue to guide and serve the Church faithfully. He also asked for continued prayers for himself and for all the clergy, that they  may remain steadfast in their vocation and service to God’s people.

The celebration concluded with heartfelt thanksgiving, a touching reminder of God’s faithfulness and the beauty of a life dedicated to His service.
