Joy and gratitude filled the sacred halls of St. Mary’s Cathedral on 6 September 2025, as clergies, religious sisters, and parishioners gathered to honour two local religious sisters, Sr. M. Theresa Petrus and Sr. M. Alice Lopez. on the occasion of their Silver Jubilee of Religious Profession and consecrated life. The celebration marked a significant milestone in the sisters’ faith journeys, both of whom have dedicated 25 years of faithful service to the Church and the community.

The solemn Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom, Bishop of the Diocese of Sandakan, and concelebrated by priests from various parishes. In his address, Bishop Julius expressed his gratitude to the Mother General of the FSIC, Sr. M. Francisca Wong, for choosing Sandakan as the venue for the renewal of the Religious Profession of Sr. Theresa and Sr. Alice. He remarked that this was the first time the faithful of Sandakan had witnessed such a grand and meaningful celebration.

The Bishop congratulated both Sisters on their Silver Jubilee, recalling that 25 years ago, when they first professed their Religious Vows, it was during a Jubilee Year. At that time, St. Pope John Paul II had encouraged the faithful to love Christ and to continue proclaiming Him to the world.

Bishop Julius noted that Sr. Theresa and Sr. Alice are truly products of the Church, sent forth to journey in faith and love into the new millennium. Fittingly, they now renew their Perpetual Religious Profession during another great Jubilee—the Jubilee of Hope—symbolizing a “hope does not disappoint.”  On behalf of the Sandakan Diocese and its people, he expressed his deep gratitude for the indispensable services of the Jubilarians.  Meanwhile he encouraged the young single girls to consider joining the religious congregation.

Following the Sacred Mass, the celebration continued with joyful fellowship in the Parish Hall. Various communities and groups came together, generously preparing a delightful array of dishes for all to enjoy. In a touching moment, both jubilarians united to cut a beautifully decorated jubilee cake, symbolizing the shared joy of their vocation and the abundant blessings they have received over the years. Adding to the festive spirit, a special cake was prepared by parishioners to honour five other Sisters who had recently celebrated their anniversaries, deepening the atmosphere of gratitude and communal celebration.       It was both inspiring and deeply moving to witness the unity of the religious community, as sisters from all across Sabah, came together for this joyous occasion.  Their presence reflected a profound spirit of communion and mutual support, a powerful reminder of the beauty of lives wholly devoted to God and His people.

Both Sr. Alice and Sr. Theresa expressed their  heartfelt gratitude to God for the gift of life and the daily blessings that sustain them. They reflected on the unity within their diverse community, where Sisters from different races and backgrounds live, pray, and serve together in harmony.  Acknowledging that misunderstandings may sometimes arise, they affirmed that their commitment to community life and to God remains unwavering. They shared the inspiring words of St. Paul from his Letter to the Romans, reminding all that “whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”  On behalf of both Sisters, they extended heartfelt thanks to God calling  them to religious life, and to all who have supported and accompanied them along the way—both those present at the celebration and those unable to attend. They expressed special gratitude for the friendships and fellowship that enrich their lives and make their mission meaningful.  To the younger generation, Sr. Alice and Sr. Theresa offered these encouraging words: to boldly say ‘Yes’ to God’s call and to follow Him courageously when He invites them.  Their message concluded with a blessing for all, thanking everyone for being part of their life’s journey and praying that God’s  abundant blessings be upon them.

The celebration was also marked by a beautiful show of solidarity from the parishioners, who came together in support of their local Sisters and those celebrating their jubilees. Their presence, contributions, and joyful participation reflected the deep respect and love they hold for the religious women who have faithfully served their community. As the ceremony drew to a close, the echoes of prayers and praises lingered in the air—a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and devotion that permeated the hearts of all who were present. The Silver Jubilee celebration will forever stand as a shining example of selflessness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to serving others in the name of love and faith.

Sr. Mary Theresa Petrus – A Journey of Faith, Growth, and Grace

As she celebrates her Silver JubileeSr. Mary Theresa Petrus reflects on her 25-year journey in consecrated life with deep reverence and gratitude. For her, responding to God’s call was not a decision made out of lack or circumstance—it was a deliberate and wholehearted “yes” to the plan that God had already destined for her even before she was born.

The fourth of seven siblings, Sr. Mary Theresa had been working after completing Level 5 of her education. It was not until the age of 27 that she finally responded to God’s invitation to religious life. What deeply moved her towards this calling was the inspiring presence and service of the FSIC Sisters (Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception) in her home parish, St. Mary’s Church. Their dedication was not limited to one area of ministry but spanned across the entire Church—serving people from all walks of life and stages of growth.

What especially stood out to her was the holistic approach the Sisters took in nurturing individuals—from childhood through adulthood—always grounded in the mission of spreading the Good News. Witnessing this kind of integrated ministry inspired Sr. Mary Theresa to follow in their footsteps.

Religious life, as she describes, is not a path exempt from trials. Like any family, community life comes with its own share of misunderstandings, conflicts, and growing pains. Yet, for Sr. Mary Theresa, the vows of Poverty (Simplicity), Obedience and Humility, and Chastity (Purity) remain central to her identity as a consecrated person. In a world overflowing with distractions and the lure of modern comforts, she chooses to walk this path with an open heart and grounded faith.

The Eucharist plays a central role in her spiritual journey. In the celebration of Mass and the reception of the Body of Christ, she finds strength, renewal, and peace. She often turns to Scripture and personal reflection to navigate the challenges she faces. Every verse and spiritual insight becomes a guiding light, helping her remain rooted in her vocation.

Sr. Mary Theresa is deeply aware of her own human limitations and acknowledges that without God’s grace, she is nothing. This humility drives her to continuously seek wisdom through spiritual reading and learning from the experiences of others. She believes strongly in the power of community—finding strength and encouragement in peer sharing and in the mutual support of her fellow Sisters.

For her, challenges are not obstacles; they are necessary parts of the journey—essential for personal growth, deeper formation, and inner transformation. She sees each trial as a way for God to mold her more fully into His image.

“Without challenges,” she says, “religious life would lack meaning. Growth and perseverance would not be possible. And above all, without God as my source of strength, my refuge, and my foundation, it would be impossible to face the trials that shape this journey.”

As she looks to the future, Sr. Mary Theresa offers a heartfelt appeal to the youth of today:

In a world dominated by modern distractions, noise, and rapid change, take a moment to pause. Reflect. Listen. God may be calling you, too.

With 25 years behind her and a lifetime still unfolding, Sr. Mary Theresa Petrus remains a testament to quiet faithfulness, resilient love, and the enduring joy of a life fully surrendered to God’s will.

Sr. Mary Alice Lopez – Guided by Grace: 25 Years of Consecrated Life

As she celebrates her Silver JubileeSr. Mary Alice Lopez reflects on her journey with profound gratitude, recognizing that everything in life is part of God’s plan. Born on 25 July 1969 in Tawau, Sr. Mary Alice traces her call to religious life back to the small and quiet moments that gradually revealed God’s purpose for her.

Though her father was Catholic, he rarely attended church, and it wasn’t until 1993—while working at her aunt’s company—that her interest in the Catholic faith was sparked. Listening to two new employees share their experiences in Church activities stirred a curiosity in her. She was drawn to the faith and, in April 1994, was baptized. Her godmother, a woman she met at a Church celebration, became a pivotal figure in her spiritual growth.

By 1995, she was actively involved in youth ministry, becoming a member of the parish youth committee. She quickly became aware of the challenges faced by a multilingual community and saw a need for leaders who could connect across language and cultural divides. This realization deepened her desire to serve and, eventually, to become a Sister.

Her calling was further affirmed through encounters with different congregations during a youth visit in Kota Kinabalu. It was during a visit to the FSIC Sisters at St. Joseph’s Convent in Penampang that her heart stirred deeply. As she left the chapel that day, she felt a strong inner voice whisper: “I want to come back to this chapel.” From that moment, she knew that the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (FSIC) was the congregation where she belonged.

In 1997, she overcame multiple challenges—including family opposition and personal doubts—to attend the FSIC Vocation Seminar in Telipok. That experience confirmed her call, and she formally entered Aspirancy later that year. Her formation journey included staying at St. Mary Convent, teaching in a kindergarten, and participating in parish activities. Though initially unsure how to communicate effectively as a Chinese-speaking candidate, she trusted in God’s providence.

Her family’s opposition deepened during her holiday break before entering postulancy. Tempted by job offers, better pay, and her family’s emotional pleas, Sr. Mary Alice faced a painful decision. Ultimately, with a firm conviction in her heart, she chose to follow Christ’s call. Despite her mother’s painful words of rejection, she remained steadfast in her decision, knowing God was calling her to something greater.

She entered Postulancy in June 1997 at St. Mary of the Angels, Papar, embracing a new life in community. Despite challenges in adapting to communal living, household chores, and language barriers, she persevered. Her time in formation was marked by personal growth, a deepening prayer life, and spiritual maturity. Psalm 126:5-6 became a guiding light:

“Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5).

This Scripture verse became her life’s compass, especially when God’s plans seemed unclear or difficult.

Now, after 25 years as a Religious Sister, Sr. Mary Alice sees her life as a tapestry woven by God—colored by joy, sacrifice, trials, and grace. She acknowledges that God never promised an easy path, but He promised His constant presence. Her life has been filled with moments that are sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy, and each has played a role in shaping her vocation.

Each morning, she awakens with gratitude, simply thankful to breathe the air God gives. For her, every breath is a reminder of God’s faithfulness.

“Everything I have is a gift from God, and what I achieve is my gift to Him,” she often says.

Her journey continues, shaped by prayer, humility, and the joy of surrender. As she celebrates her Jubilee, Sr. Mary Alice Lopez remains a living witness to the beauty of faithfulness, perseverance, and the quiet courage to say “yes” to God—again and again.
