The Solemnity of Corpus Christi was celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral with great reverence at the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom, Bishop of the Diocese of Sandakan, on 7 June 2026.

Bishop Julius reflected on the deeper meaning of the Feast of Corpus Christi, inviting the faithful to look beyond their physical needs and consider the deepest desires of the human heart. He encouraged them to reflect on a longing that goes beyond food and material needs and explained that every person seeks meaning in life, love, and ultimately eternal life with God.

Drawing from the Scriptures, Bishop Julius reminded the faithful of God’s constant faithfulness, recalling how He guided and provided for the Israelites throughout their journey in the wilderness toward the Promised Land. He noted that while it is easy for people to turn to God in times of hardship, they often forget Him when life becomes comfortable. He encouraged the faithful to recognize that blessings and achievements are gifts from God and signs of His abundant grace. Reflecting on Jesus’ words, “I am the Bread of Life,” the Bishop emphasized that Christ offers more than physical nourishment. Through the Eucharist, He gives spiritual life, remains truly present among His people, and strengthens them to face life’s challenges and difficulties.

Bishop Julius also highlighted St. Paul’s teaching that the Eucharist unites believers not only with Christ but also with one another. He called on the faithful to foster unity, mutual respect, and cooperation within their communities, reflecting Christ’s presence through their daily lives. Linking this message to the Church’s synodal journey, he encouraged all Christians, regardless of race, culture, or background, to remain united in the Body of Christ. He concluded by reminding the faithful that Christ desires to be united with His people, and they, in turn, are called to remain united with Him and with one another.

The celebration of Corpus Christi served as a powerful reminder of Christ’s abiding presence in the Eucharist and His call for believers to live in faith, gratitude, and unity.
